HALL OF FAME BROADCASTER DAVE STRADER HONORED

09/12/2017 2:01 PM -
Glens Falls, NY – The Adirondack Civic Center Coalition and Adirondack Thunder announced today that they have recognized legendary broadcaster Dave Strader by naming the press box at Cool Insuring Arena in his honor.

A dedication ceremony September 16 was held inside Cool Insuring Arena in downtown Glens Falls.  Dave and his family, former Red Wings, officials and well-wishers were all in attendance for the memorable day.

Strader, a Glens Falls native and two-time Adirondack Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, was the first professional broadcaster at the Glens Falls Civic Center as he spent six seasons as the voice of the Adirondack Red Wings from 1979 - 1985. He has gone on to call NHL games with Detroit, Florida, Phoenix and Dallas, as well as nationally with ESPN, ABC, Fox and NBC Sports, where he broadcast NHL games as well as hockey at the 2006 and 2014 Winter Olympics.

In June 2016, Dave was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in the bile duct but he returned to the booth in March 2017 to call five Dallas Stars home games and two Stanley Cup Playoff Games for NBC Sports. In April 2017, Dave was honored by the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto as the 2017 Foster Hewitt Memorial Award winner for outstanding contributions as a hockey broadcaster.

Dave and his wife Colleen have also established the Dave Strader Scholarship, given annually to a high school student from Glens Falls High School, the alma mater of both Dave and Colleen. Anyone interested in making a donation to the scholarship should send it to Janice Casey, Treasurer, Glens Falls City Schools at 15 Quade St, Glens Falls, NY 12801. All donations are tax deductible.
